Healing the planet is imperative.
The interconnection of our food supply and the health of the planet has never been clearer. The Danforth Center is committed to making agriculture more productive and more sustainable.

Field Research Site
The future of sustainable agriculture starts here. The field is where the experiment meets the environment—bridging the gap between the lab and the land. Developing a nearby field research site is crucial to the sustainability of long-term projects—and to driving breakthroughs in crop resilience, climate adaptation, and sustainable food production. By endowing the site’s director and securing ongoing operational support, you can help shape a future where science fuels sustainability—and no one goes hungry.
SINC Center
To feed the world today, current crops require the application of unsustainable amounts of synthetic nitrogen fertilizer. This widespread practice is expensive for farmers and pollutes our environment, both through the fossil fuels required to create it and through the run-off in our waterways leading to algal blooms. The Subterranean Influences on Nitrogen and Carbon (SINC) Center is dedicated to developing technology that will reduce the amount of chemical nitrogen fertilizer used in agriculture without sacrificing crop yield.
The SINC Center aims to unlock the secrets of plant-microbe environment interactions in order to improve plants’ use of atmospheric nitrogen, thus diminishing the need for fertilizer. The Center also focuses on improving cover crops to encourage their widespread adoption as a tool to slow erosion and runoff, while enriching the soil. Using cutting-edge technologies and cross-disciplinary approaches, the SINC team will harness the power of plant genetics, microbes, and cover crops to diminish the need for nitrogen fertilizer by 12% or more in the US. That’s the equivalent of removing 10 million cars from the road.

SUSTAINABILITY INITIATIVES
Tomorrow’s breakthroughs start with today’s scientists. Through fellowships, graduate student programs, and internships in sustainability research, we are cultivating the next generation of innovators dedicated to addressing our planet’s most pressing challenges. Your support will provide hands-on training, mentorship, and resources to emerging leaders who will drive solutions in climate resilience, regenerative agriculture, and sustainable food systems. Together, we can empower early-career scientists to shape a healthier, more sustainable future for all.
